British Iron Age
First Millennium BC, Gold Ring Money
A smooth, solid, pennanular ring of gold, with blunt ends.
6.3 grams, 15mm x 16mm.
Lightly toned, a most pleasing example.

*Before the use of regular round-shaped struck or cast coinage, the Celtic tribes employed items of various shapes and metals for use in trade. Although this has not been conclusively identified as an early form of money, these rings have been found in coin hoards and do bear much resemblance to other Celtic objects which were accepted as "proto-money", such as small bronze or ‘Potin wheels’.
