Henry VIII Gold Hammered Sovereign, of Twenty Shillings.
Third Coinage, (1544-7) Type IIb, 20ct. Fineness
 Southwark Mint, Mint mark S (1544-7), both sides.
Obverse: Crowned robed portrait of the King seated on an ornate throne, holding orb and sceptre, very fine lattice work and pellet backing, Tudor rose below, with beaded inner and outer borders (both sides) surrounding, trefoil stops, with the Latin legend: , S hEnRIC ; 8 DI;GRA; AGL; FRAnCIE xx Z xx hIBERN; REX’  
Reverse: Crowned Royal square-topped shield, flanked by supporters, HR in cartouche below, trefoil stops, with Latin legend surrounding: S IhS;  AVTEM;  TRANSIENS; PERMEDIVM;  ILLOR;  IBAT’
12.18 grams, 39 mm in diameter.

A most attractive mature Holbeinesque portrait of the King, well struck for the issue on a full round flan, with a superb deep golden tone.
Has been graded and slabbed by NGC as XF40, which is very conservatively graded, especially when compared to a similar example in the recent Horace Hird Collection sale.
