CHARLES I SILVER CROWN, TYPE 3b PLUME OVER SHIELD

SOLD

Code: 10666

Charles I Silver Hammered Crown (1625-49).
Tower Mint London, type 3b
Mint mark Portcullis both sides (1633-34), Third horseman
Obverse: Armoured King on horseback facing left with long upright sword and flowing sash, with Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding: .CAROLVS. D; G; MAG; BRI; FRA; ET. HI; REX.
Reverse: Oval garnished quartered shield of arms, with plume above, Latin legend and beaded border surrounding: . CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO .
Cooper dies: FRC XIV/XVIII.
S.2759; Brooker 253
29.9 grams, 43 mm in diameter.
Struck on a large size full round flan, horseman a little weak in parts as per usual for the issue, a contemporary punch mark before REGNO within the reverse legend, which has not pierced the coin, otherwise a pleasing example of an early Charles I issue crown, with an attractive old cabinet tone, practically very fine for the type.
